Serving in Worship
We need nearly 30 volunteers every Sunday for our three worship services. Training is provided for all ministry areas. Contact Joan to volunteer for any of these ministries.
Oblation Bearers: Members of the congregation who bring the bread and wine for Communion to the altar during the liturgy. At the Cathedral, we use oblation bearers at the 10:30 a.m. worship service and at special services.
Greeters / Welcome Ministry: Every Sunday, we like to have 2 volunteers before the 10:30 service to welcome parishioners to worship. These people greet parishioners as they come into the Nave for worship services. We need volunteers who will serve once a month, as well as people who will substitute for a greeter (s) who unexpectedly cannot serve.
Acolytes: Acolytes assist with the 10:30 service and other Holy Day/special services. We will add acolytes to the 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. service if people are interested. Their ministry adds dignity and order to the liturgy and greatly assists the smooth flow of worship. This ministry is open both to youth and adults; training is provided. Both regular (once a month) Acolytes are needed, as well as substitutes.
Eucharistic Ministers: A Eucharistic Minister is a lay person licensed by the Bishop to administer the consecrated elements (Bread and Wine) of the Holy Eucharist. Eucharistic Ministers may be licensed to administer the consecrated Bread and Wine at any celebration of Holy Communion in the absence of a sufficient number of priests or deacons to assist the Presider. Typically at the Cathedral, one Eucharistic Minister serves at the Sunday 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. services, and two at the 10:30 a.m. service.
Ushers: The ushers greet worshipers, hand out the worship bulletins, pass the offering plate and guide parishioners to communion. A friendly smile and the capacity for warm hospitality are the two most important criteria. A minimum of 4 ushers are used at the 10:30 service. One usher is used at the 8:00 service.
Altar Guild: The Altar Guild works as monthly teams to set up and clean up after services by removing the Communion elements from the Altar. In caring for the Altar, linens and vessels we become an active part of the liturgy. Teams work with the Sacristan in this preparation and clean up. Both monthly volunteers and substitutes are needed at both the 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. services.
AV/Livestreaming Team: Livestreaming Cathedral services allows parishioners and guests to experience worship at the Cathedral from wherever they are. You can be part of the team that brings the service into the digital world by helping with sound and/or video. Training is provided.
Lectors: Lector is the title given to those who read the assigned Scriptures for the day. The Ministry of the Lector is to proclaim the Word of God by reading from both the Old and New Testament at church services throughout the year. A Lector may also leads the Prayers of the People.
Healing Ministers: Healing ministers offer prayers during or immediately after the Eucharist. People who desire to receive a prayer of healing for themselves or on behalf of someone else may speak with one of the healing ministers about their request. Healing ministers may also pray with people who are in the hospital or who are convalescing. At the end of what is often a simple, brief prayer the minister will anoint your forehead with consecrated oil, making the sign of the cross.
Prayers of the People Writers: Using the guidelines in the Book of Common Prayer and working with Deacon Barbara, individuals write prayers that are used in Sunday and other special services.

We lament with Christ that the poor may very well always be with us. In these programs, we cannot and do not provide comprehensive solutions.
