I hope everyone had the opportunity to see some portion of the solar eclipse this past Monday. I realize we were not in the path of totality, but it was still fascinating to me to look through my special glasses and see at least a partial eclipse. I was at the Cathedral while it took place. While it didn’t get completely dark, the light definitely changed, and the offices grew darker during the eclipse. It was neat to be a part of this celestial event as we joined with others from Mexico, the US, and Canada to see what we could see. The light may have dimmed for a time, but never went away, always came back. In some ways the crossing over from Lent into Easter mirrors this phenomenon. The light may seem to get dim during Lent, but it never goes away and always returns to its full brightness at Easter.
Now, Easter continues, and the light continues to grow and brighten throughout this season. We will continue to hear Easter stories in our Gospel readings and about the ongoing work of the church in Acts. You will hear me, and others, say things such as “and so it continues…” during this time of year because that’s exactly what happens. What was begun in the resurrection continues, the story continues, in us as we live our lives as Easter people. May we continue to enjoy and share the light that returned to us at Easter.
Next week I will write to you from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada as I will be attending the North American Deans Conference hosted by Christ Church Cathedral, Ottawa.
Please continue to pray for one another, for our Cathedral family, the nation, and the world.
