Dear Cathedral Family,
I feel like we could all use a little reassurance today, so I want to reassure you that the love of Christ is with you today, just as it has been with you every day. I am with you as well, ready to love you and support you always. On Sunday, I asked you to be kind to everyone while going out to vote in yesterday’s election. Politics shouldn’t change how we treat one another. Today, I ask you to do the same—be kind to everyone.
Whether you are pleased with the outcome of the election or not, it doesn’t change our call to be Christ to all people, no matter who they are or how they voted. Our Presiding Bishop, The Most Rev. Sean Rowe, put out a letter today saying we need to continue to “fulfill our baptismal covenant by proclaiming in word and example the Good News of God in Christ, striving for justice and peace among all people, and protecting the dignity of every human being.” He goes on to say that we, as the Episcopal Church, will continue to “welcome the stranger,” “support the dignity, safety, and equality of women and LGBTQ+ people as an expression of our faith,” and “be agents of peace and reconciliation in our communities, both in person and online.”
We are children of God, members of Christ’s body, created to love and called to share that love with everyone—always. May you be filled with Christ’s light today as we go forth to love and serve the Lord. In closing, I remind you of the blessing I tend to use almost every Sunday:
Go forth into the world in peace,
be of good courage
hold fast that which is good.
Render to no one evil for evil,
strengthen the faint hearted,
support the weak,
help the afflicted,
honor all persons.
Love and serve the Lord
rejoicing in the power of the Spirit.
And the blessing of God almighty, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,
be with you and remain with you always.
